A wood chip dryer is a specialized machine designed for drying wet materials such as wood chips, sawdust, wood shavings, and bark. The dryer adopts a rotary drum design, using a furnace to provide heat. Inside the drum, hot air exchanges with the material, evaporating the moisture.
The wood chip dryer is controlled by a PLC operating system. It includes a feeding system, drying system, and discharging system. Auxiliary systems include a dust removal system, heat source system, and more. The dryer can reduce the moisture content of high-moisture wood chips to around 20% or even lower.

Higher Calorific Value
After drying, wood chips have higher heat value. They can be made into biomass pellets by a pellet machine and used for power generation in power plants or for heating in winter.

Working Principle of a Wood Chip Dryer
The wood chip dryer adopts a hot air exchange method for drying. Heat sources can be electricity, biomass pellets, natural gas, or coal.
Size Reduction & Feeding
Wood chips are crushed by a wood crusher to about 3 mm in size, then evenly fed into the dryer through the feeding system.
Drying in the Drum
Inside the drum, driven by a motor, the drum keeps rotating, and the wood chips tumble continuously. Meanwhile, hot air flows through the drum and makes full contact with the wood chips to remove moisture.
Discharging
The dried wood chips are automatically discharged through the discharging system.
During the drying process, customers can control wood chip moisture content, drying temperature, and drum speed via the PLC system.
Temperature control is especially important:
If the temperature is too low, drying will be incomplete.
If the temperature is too high, the wood chips may carbonize.
