What is a Distilling Grain Dryer? A Complete Guide to DDGS Rotary Drum Dryers
A Distilling Grain Dryer, often referred to as a DDGS Dryer (Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles), is an industrial drying machine specifically designed to dehydrate the nutrient-rich byproducts (spent grains) from the brewing and distilling processes. This efficient drying is crucial for preserving the material, transforming wet, perishable waste into a stable, valuable, and marketable animal feed ingredient.
By removing moisture, these dryers prevent spoilage, reduce volume for easier transportation and storage, and unlock significant economic and environmental benefits for distilleries and breweries
A Distilling Grain Dryer is highly versatile and can handle a wide range of spent grains from various alcohol production processes, including:
Brewer’s Spent Grain (BSG): The leftover barley and other grains from beer production.
Distiller’s Spent Grain (DSG): Grains from whiskey, vodka, bourbon, and other spirit production, often from corn, rye, wheat, or barley.
Sorghum Spent Grain: From sorghum-based spirits and beers.
Rice Hulls and Other Byproducts: From sake or rice spirit production.
Essentially, it can process any wet, fibrous grain residue left after fermentation and mashing.

distilling grain dryer Working Principle:
Feeding: The wet spent grains (with high moisture content of 60-80%) are continuously fed into the elevated end of a slightly inclined, rotating drum.
Heat Application: A hot gas stream, generated from a chosen heat source (coal, biomass, natural gas, etc.), is introduced into the drum. It flows co-currently (same direction) or counter-currently (opposite direction) to the material.
Cascading Action: As the drum rotates, internal flights (lifters) pick up the grains and shower them through the hot gas stream. This creates a cascading “curtain” of material, maximizing the surface area exposed to heat for highly efficient moisture evaporation.
Drying & Discharge: The material gradually moves down the drum due to gravity and the incline. By the time it reaches the lower end, its moisture content is reduced to a stable 10-12%. The dried, uniform product is then discharged for cooling and packaging.
distilling grain dryer Key Features & Advantages:
High Efficiency: The cascading action ensures rapid and uniform drying.
Large Capacity: Capable of handling high volumes of wet material continuously, ideal for large-scale operations.
Robust Construction: Built with durable materials to withstand abrasive and moist environments.
Energy Flexibility: Can be designed to utilize various heat sources.
Low Maintenance: Simple design with fewer moving parts leads to reduced downtime and operating costs.
Excellent Moisture Control: Produces a consistently dried product with precise moisture conten

Heat Source Options for Your Distilling Grain Dryer
We understand that fuel availability and cost are critical. Our dryers are designed with flexibility and can be equipped with combustion systems for the following heat sources:
Coal: A traditional and cost-effective option in many regions.
Biomass Pellets: An eco-friendly and sustainable choice, using wood pellets, agricultural waste, or even partially dried spent grains.
Natural Gas / LPG: A clean and convenient option with easy temperature control.
Diesel / Heavy Oil: Suitable for locations where other fuels are not readily available.
Indirect Heating: For applications requiring zero product contamination, using thermal oil or steam.
We can advise on the most economical and efficient heat source for your specific location and operation.
